Baishiyuan Village on road to prosperity

Baishiyuan Village, located in the north of Gaoqiao Town, Changsha County, was once poverty-stricken, due to many mountains, few fields and scarce resources.

Since the beginning of this year, the village has achieved a steady increase in collective economic income through various measures. The village collective economy is expected to exceed one million yuan by the end of the year.

Recently, the reporter came to Baishiyuan Village to figure out how the village has embarked on a road of rural revitalization with ecological beauty, industrial prosperity, rich people and unique characteristics.

“Baishiyuan Supply and Marketing Cooperative invested 120 boxes of bees in the early stage. 12 beekeeping households in the village were involved and experts were invited to give training, creating a characteristic product of the village,” said Yang Xizhi, Party branch secretary of Baishiyuan Village.

Yang Xizhi formed a clear idea on how to help farmers truly embark on the road to prosperity after many field investigations and studies, that is, through the development model of “party building plus village collective plus enterprise plus farmer”, to create one characteristic product of the village according to local conditions.

Therefore, the Baishiyuan Supply and Marketing Cooperative in Gaoqiao Town was established in June this year, to bring agricultural and sideline products together for sales after unified packaging. Bee products are made a featured product.

Baishiyuan Village has a beautiful natural ecology that is suitable for raising bees. Villager Huang Wenbin has experience in beekeeping and currently keeps 14 boxes of bees.

“This year is my fourth year of beekeeping, with an annual output of 150-200kg. I once sold the honey by myself, mainly through acquaintances,” said Huang Wenbin. Though the honey was good, few people knew it. He was very upset.

But this will never happen again. He even can lead more people to raise bees with his own experience and skills.

“Now the cooperative helps the villagers with the sale, so they have no worries at all,” said Yang Xizhi. The quality of products gets improved through unified filtration and packaging. This year, 2,500kg of honey has been ordered.

“In the previous two years, I had to sell peppers, beans and other vegetables I planted by myself, but now the cooperative purchases them from me every day.”

In the base of villager Wu Jiefu, now more than 50 kilograms of chili peppers can be harvested every day, which are directly purchased every morning.

Different vegetables are harvested in different seasons, so his life is getting better and better.

Today, the Baishiyuan Village Cooperative mainly buys vegetables, agricultural products and other local products from villagers, and sells them based on orders. Later, it will also integrate the resources of the surrounding villages and communities to increase product varieties, improve product quality, and open up a larger market.

In addition, Baishiyuan Village established Hunan Chayuan Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd through cooperation with the Gaoqiao Base of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences in the village, which has advantages in technology and resources.

“The Academy of Agricultural Sciences needs a large number of workers from March to October every year, so we set up a company to provide labor and pay wages to the villagers working here,” said Yang Xizhi.

In addition, Baishiyuan Village applied to be Changsha Labor Practice Base in 2011 and passed the review in June 2023 through active efforts.

With the help of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, it has successfully built a comprehensive modern agricultural project, which integrates scientific research, application, variety testing, demonstration and promotion, and tourism and leisure, focusing on rural study tours.

At present, the base has more than 50 mu (about 3.33 hectares) of tea farms, 3 greenhouses for science popularization, more than 10 mu (0.667 hectares) of flower and seedling plantations, 15 vegetable research bases, 1 succulent hall and several dining rooms.

“We are still exploring an operating model that will generate greater benefits and increase the income of the village collective economy,” said Yang Xizhi.

Baishiyuan Village built a peanut seedling refrigerator workshop, and 1100 cubic meters of pre-cooling storage and high-temperature cold storage as production refrigerated fresh-keeping and temperature-controlled hydroponic areas.

The project now has an output value of more than 4 million yuan and offers jobs to over 50 local villagers with an annual wage of more than 400,000 yuan, and brings an annual increase of 100,000 yuan for the village-level collective economy.

It has also built a high-standard tea refrigeration and fresh-keeping warehouse of 520 cubic meters, realizing a real-time controllable temperature between minus 16 °C and 16 °C. The warehouse can preserve and store more than 40 tons of tea, and promote the village-level collective economy to increase its annual income by 50,000 yuan.

Baishiyuan Village has increased its collective economic income from 320,000 yuan in 2021 to more than 600,000 yuan in 2022, and the village collective economy is expected to exceed one million yuan this year.

“Next year, I will increase efforts to develop the honey industry and make the village’s collective economic income reach 1.2 million yuan, and 1.5 million yuan in 2025. I hope the villagers’ lives will be better and the village will become richer,” said Yang Xizhi.
